A signet ring is a mark of identity, for men and women. Worn plain, or engraved with a crest, symbol or initials that are entirely yours, it's a legacy piece made to be worn every day and passed on.

Everyone's legacy is unique, and a signet ring is a way to wear your mark quietly but proudly: a family crest, a sports team logo, an artist's design. A plain signet given now can be engraved later, once the person wearing it knows what they want on it.

The Range

Choose from five signet styles, in round, oval, landscape, navette or quadrant shapes, each with a smaller or larger face, then add the engraving of your choice. Or, if you have something more specific in mind, we can fully customise the shape of the ring itself.

How Personalisation Works

Send us your image. A crest, symbol or design you'd like engraved. A photo or rough sketch is enough to start.
Choose your engraving style: laser, hand, or CAD designed and cast.
We prepare a preliminary sketch and refine it with you.
Approve your final design before we engrave.

A signet ring carries a mark that means something to the person wearing it. Our clients have engraved rings with a Navy symbol for their years at sea, the flag of the country they came from, and family crests and mottos.

Others leave the face blank. A plain signet has its own quiet presence.

Five Face Shapes, Two Sizes

We make our signet rings in five shapes, each with a smaller or larger face. The shape changes the character of the ring more than you might expect.

Round - the most traditional signet, and the easiest face to centre a crest or monogram on.
Oval - a softer, upright form that suits initials and most crests.
Landscape - a wider-than-tall face that gives room to a horizontal design, a name or a line of text.
Navette - a pointed oval with a distinctive, elongated outline.
Quadrant - a square-cornered face for a more architectural look.

All five sit on the same comfortable curved band shape that Jens Hansen created for the Movie Ring, which makes them easy to wear every day.

Gold, Platinum or Sterling Silver

Yellow gold comes in 9ct, 14ct, 18ct and 22ct, and red and white gold in 9ct, 14ct and 18ct. Platinum and sterling silver are available in every shape.

If you are planning deep or detailed engraving, the metal matters. Harder gold carats and platinum hold fine lines well over years of wear, while 22ct and sterling silver are softer.

Monograms, Crests and Your Own Artwork

There are three ways to personalise the face.

For initials with an Elvish feel, we offer exclusive Elvish monograms designed with calligrapher Daniel Reeve, who spent more than two years refining his own alphabet for them. We size and centre the monogram on your ring ourselves.

For a crest, logo or symbol, we engrave your own artwork. You don’t need finished art to start: order the ring and we will work with you on the design and layout, and send a proof before we engrave.

Straight answers from the people who make your ring.

Are signet rings only for men?

No. We make them for men and women, and the smaller face sizes are often chosen for a finer hand or a little finger.

Do you send a proof before engraving my signet ring?

For your own artwork, crest or logo, yes, always. For Daniel Reeve monograms, we size and centre the design ourselves and only send a proof if you ask for one.

Can I engrave inside the band as well as the face?

Yes. Choose top only, inside only, or both top and inside when you order.

Can I buy the ring plain now and engrave it later?

Yes. Every shape can be ordered with a blank polished face.

My family crest is very detailed. Can it still be engraved?

Usually, yes but it may benefit from being simplified or stylised. We have also carved crests using CAD, and cast rings from an existing design using the lost wax method, when a crest needs more depth than flat engraving gives.

What face size should I choose?

Each shape comes in two sizes, for example 11x10mm or 15x12mm for the oval. The larger face gives more room for a detailed design; the smaller one is subtler on the hand.

Can a signet ring be set with a gemstone?

Yes, as a custom design. We have set signet rings with greenstone, amethyst and other stones; see our custom signet designs for examples.

Are your signet rings made to order?

Yes. Each ring is made by hand in our Nelson workshop in your chosen shape, size and metal.

How does the free design consultation work?

The consultation is free, takes about 30 minutes, and there’s no obligation. Most overseas clients meet us by video at a time that suits their time zone, and you can also visit us in our Nelson workshop or talk by phone or email. You’ll be matched with one jewellery specialist, who stays with your project from the first call until your ring arrives. Bring an idea, a sketch or a symbol that matters to you, and a budget if you have one. If you decide to go ahead, a small design deposit starts the design work and comes off the price of your finished ring.

How much does a custom signet ring cost?

Our standard signet rings start from US$349 in sterling silver, US$1,890 in gold and US$2,290 in white gold or platinum. Custom designs are priced on the design, metal and any stones, and we confirm a quote once we understand what you want. Custom work can start from whatever budget you have. Tell us your figure at the consultation and we will design to it.

How long will my ring take to reach me?

For one of our standard signet rings, allow 2 to 3 weeks for us to make it, plus about a week if it’s engraved. A custom design takes longer: allow 4 to 6 weeks from your first consultation to the finished ring. Settling the design usually takes longer than making it. Once it’s ready, we ship by tracked, insured DHL Express, which usually takes 5 to 7 business days to the US. Shipping is free on orders over US$499. If you need your ring by a particular date, tell us before you order.

How do I get my ring size right if I can’t visit?

If you don’t know your size yet, choose “I don’t know my size” when you order and we will contact you to confirm it before we start making your ring. Otherwise, give us your size in US, UK or European sizing. A local jeweller will usually measure you for free. Measure in the evening, when fingers are at their largest, and use a ring of a similar width, as signet bands are wider than most rings and width changes the fit. If your ring doesn’t fit, we can arrange a return for resizing, or a reputable local jeweller can help.

Can I return or exchange an engraved ring?

Engraved and custom rings are made just for you, so they can’t be returned. That’s why we always send you a proof of your own artwork, crest or logo before we engrave anything. If you need a different size, we can usually resize your ring for a charge. Unengraved pieces can be returned if you tell us within 14 days of delivery and the ring is unused and in its original condition. See our Shipping & Returns page for full details.

What is the difference between hand engraving and laser engraving?

Most personalisation, such as initials, text, symbols, logos and crests, is laser engraved. This gives crisp, accurate lines and works from almost any clear artwork. Hand engraving is done by our master engraver, who carves a pattern freehand into the face and shoulders of the ring. Each piece is one of a kind, with the depth and character of handwork. Can you engrave a sterling silver signet ring?

We can, but we don’t recommend it for a ring worn every day. Silver is soft, so an engraved face slowly loses its crispness in a way gold doesn’t. If you want a mark that still reads sharply in twenty years, 9ct or 18ct gold holds the detail far better. We do make plain silver signets, where there’s no fine engraving to wear away.
