Custom starts wherever your budget does. Most of our commissions land between US$1,000 and US$5,000, and three things move that number: the metal, the centre stone, and the hours of work the design asks for. Your jewellery specialist gives you a firm quote before any making begins. Bring a figure to your consultation and we will design to it.

That is exactly the right time to book. Most people arrive with a saved screenshot, a stone they inherited, or just a feeling about what the piece should say. Turning that into a design brief is the job your jewellery specialist does every week. Sketches on the back of an envelope are useful raw material.

We change it. Your NZ$250 design deposit covers the first design and two revisions, so you see three versions before anything is made. Each revision is one round of changes rather than one email, so gather your thoughts and send them together. Further revisions are NZ$120 each (about US$70).

You see hand drawings and CAD renders each time, and nothing goes to the bench without your approval. If you decide not to go ahead at all, the deposit is the only money involved.

Allow 4 to 6 weeks from first consultation to finished piece. Design and approval take 2 to 3 weeks, the making takes another 2 to 3 weeks, and sourcing can add time if you want an unusual stone. Tell us your date at the consultation. If it is tight we will tell you what is achievable, and we can often expedite. Deciding on the design usually takes longer than making the ring.

Yes. Most of our custom work is sent internationally and we work the same way wherever you are. Initial consultations are usually by video at a time that suits your timezone, and we work by phone and email too. You'll get drawings and images as we progress. Everything travels tracked with DHL. Full insurance is a flat US$13.28 per shipment added at checkout. Coverage limit US$10,000.

Half an hour of your time. The consultation is free and there is no obligation at the end of it. If you decide to go ahead with an initial design there is a NZ$250 design deposit (about US$150), and it comes straight off the price of your finished piece. You approve the quote before we start making.

Leave that to us. It comes up on almost every proposal commission, and your jewellery specialist will work it out with you on the call. There is usually a way in, depending on whether you can borrow a ring they already wear. If we have to work from a best estimate, the ring can be resized afterwards at the standard fee, quoted before we start.

We made The One Ring for the films, so yes. Draft your text in our online translator before the consultation, or bring us the English and we will handle the transliteration. We can suggest styles that sit well alongside the films.

We supply both natural and lab-grown diamonds and will talk you through the difference without steering you either way. Natural stones come from merchants we have bought from for years, and we can supply an independent grading report, GIA or equivalent, on request.

In the Nelson showroom, often yes. Bring it in and we will look at it with you, check its condition, and tell you whether it can be reset safely. Older stones sometimes chip when they come out of a worn setting, and we cannot guarantee a stone we did not supply.

For remote commissions we recommend against it. Posting a loose stone or an inherited ring across borders as a private individual means customs paperwork, thin insurance cover and a genuine risk of losing something irreplaceable. For overseas pieces we source the stone, natural or lab-grown, with an independent grading report where you want one.

Every piece carries our lifetime workmanship guarantee. If a workmanship fault appears, send it back to the Nelson workshop and we will repair or replace it. We can also resize, service and re-polish your piece at any point in the future for a standard fee, quoted before we start.
