A signet ring is a symbol of individual identity. Wear it plain, or have your mark laser or hand engraved with a crest, monogram, symbol or text. Available in sterling silver, yellow, red and white gold, and platinum, for men and women.

Five signet ring styles

We have created five signet ring styles, each offering a smaller or larger ‘face’ size: round, oval, landscape, navette and quadrant. Every one sits on the curved band profile Jens Hansen developed in the workshop, shaped to sit comfortably against the finger for everyday wear.

We have had clients engrave rings with a Navy symbol to represent their years at sea, the flag of the home country they migrated from, and, of course, family crests and mottos.

What a signet ring costs

Price depends on three things: the metal, the face size you choose, and whether you add engraving. Sterling silver is the most accessible entry point, gold sits in the middle, and platinum is the most substantial. Each product below shows its own starting price, and the larger face sizes carry more metal and cost more accordingly. Engraving is quoted separately depending on whether it is laser or hand cut, and on the complexity of the design.

Signet rings and heraldry

The signet ring began as a working object. Its flat face carried an intaglio seal, cut in reverse, which was pressed into wax to sign and secure a document. Wearing the seal on your hand meant your mark was always with you, and it could not be used by anyone else. The tradition carried through European heraldry, where a family crest cut into the face served as both signature and lineage.

Most signet rings today are worn for the same reason, if not the same purpose. The mark is chosen rather than inherited: a crest, a monogram, an emblem, a piece of your own artwork. A plain signet works too, and can be engraved later.

Which finger do you wear a signet ring on?

Traditionally the little finger of the non-dominant hand, which kept the seal clear of the writing hand. Many people now wear one on the index or ring finger instead. There is no rule, and we size to whichever finger you choose.

Can you engrave a family crest?

Yes. Send us your crest, artwork or a description and we will work with you on how it translates to the face size you have chosen. Fine detail needs a larger face, so it is worth talking to us before you settle on a style.

A signet ring is a gift someone can make their own

Everyone’s legacy is unique to them, and a Jens Hansen signet ring is a way to subtly and yet proudly wear your mark; be it a family signature, sports team logo, or artist’s design. Even plain signet rings discreetly display a sense of individual style. A plain signet given now can be engraved later, once the person wearing it knows what they want on it.
