On 21 July, we asked Nelsonians near and far: “If there was a ring that encompassed the spirit, beauty, geography, creativeness, or history of Nelson, what might it look like?” And to find out, we launched the Nelson Ring design competition, to give Nelsonians a chance to design and win the first ever Nelson Ring.

We worked with the couple to handcraft an engagement/wedding ring using a classic Jens Hansen design and Rebecca’s very special heirloom stones. The quality diamonds we set into her beautiful ring were from four individual family rings including her mother’s engagement ring and a ring once owned by Rebecca’s grandmother.

In the Lord of the Rings, the one true ring was a symbol of power and control. Though beautiful, it was also terrible – especially when placed in the wrong hands. Few could resist its temptation. Throughout history, rings have been used been used to symbolise everything from devotion, fidelity and eternity, to the representation of a deity. However, the most common use of rings today is the denotation of love in engagements and weddings.

Soon, with apprentices and assistants on board to keep up with the nationwide orders Gurli sought, and the growing local demand, the workshop moved to Hardy St, and later to its current location on the corners of Selwyn Place and Trafalgar Square.  

Jens’ talent, energy, enthusiasm, and outspoken personality made the Jens Hansen workshop a place where artisans from all over the world came to learn about the craft, and experience Nelson culture, Jens Hansen style.
