Engagement ring on which hand?

We're often asked about which hand the engagement ring goes on.  Traditionally the engagement ring is given at the beginning of the 'engagement' and is worn on the ring finger of the left hand.  When a separate wedding ring is added on the wedding day, the engagement ring comes off and the wedding ring is placed on the ring finger first and then the engagement ring is usually placed back on the same finger sitting next to the wedding band.
